In earlier times, there were some very basic options for the treatment of interior walls. In the villages, a simple layer of cow-dung was applied to keep the interiors cool and insect-free. In towns and cities, the common practice was to whitewash the walls using lime (chuna) or chalk powder. Over the decades, these materials became obsolete and were replaced by water-based and oil-based paints that offered a wide range of colours and finishes. However, in Indian weather conditions, many of these paints were not suitable for preventing seepage. The solution was to create a new layer that was not in contact with the damp wall – and thus panelling emerged as a viable and aesthetically effective option.
